How can I market a web forum?

I've recently built a forum and am trying to attract visitors. I have written a few articles on there (about 6) and am wondering what I can do to market this type of site?

I'm not trying to sell anything directly on the site, but rather use the forum to promote another site I have. Are PPC's a good idea? Or what else should I consider doing?

PPC is a good short term strategy if you target KW correctly and have well written ads you can significantly increase your traffic.  Whether you should do PPC really depends on how much you are willing to spend to advertise for this site.

For a long term strategy I would really recommend a focus on SEO More than 80% of search traffic comes from organic listings.  Incorporate SEO in everything from site design to writing your articles.  Also, offsite SEO(Linkbuilding) is very helpful for achieving faster rankings, try and find related sites that will link to you. Some forums and blogs still give live links - look for these, don't worry about the ones that no follow the links in user generated content.

If you are not doing great in Google at first that is ok as Google often takes a while to find new sites and then to rank them well.  Check Yahoo and Live as Indicators of how well your SEO is working the sites I have worked on usually rank better there first before they achieve the same rankings in Google.

Ok, I will start working with your suggestions of starting with on-site SEO and link-building.

Thanks!
