When I try to run a backup either manually or scheduled, the Windows backup utlity aborts after a timeout error and logs the following report:

Backup Status
Operation: Backup
Active backup destination: File
Media name: "HMSAPP_Backup_Normal.bkf created 5/18/2009 at 4:05 PM"
Volume shadow copy creation: Attempt 1.
Timeout before function completed
Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:0xffffffff.
Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:ffffffff
Aborting Backup.
----------------------
The operation did not successfully complete.
----------------------
The destination for the backup files is a Buffalo Terastation. We have two other Windows 2003 servers one with almost identical hardware and they are backing up without any problems.

We are running 32 bit os.  This server has MS Exchange 2000, Active Directory, and SQL Server 2005 running on it.

I took a look at the KB provided.  I seems that Backup and Volume Shadow Copy don;t work too well with SQL server.  It turns out that the SQL server was left over from an old program that was removed. After removing SQL Server the backup worked fine.
