Why do i get 500 internal server error on load test

Hi Experts,
Why do i get 500 internal server error during load test when i increase the load. Can someone give me pointers as to what might cause this. I was under the impression that increasing load will decrease the response time sine some requests that cannot be sereved are queued and processed later.
Is there anything that needs to be done on the web server level to achieve this.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Can you submit the error message?

500 level errors are always server related.  What OS is the apache running on, how much memory, etc
