Exchange 2003 (SBS 2003) Internal emails not being delivered.

I have recently begun having problems with some internal emails.  Some emails go through and others fail.  Message Tracking Center shows the following for the failed messages:

SMTP: Advanced Queue Failed to Deliver Message
SMTP: Message Sent to Badmail

I just had another empoyee send me a series of 5 emails and I only received 1.

As far as I can tell external emails (outbound and inbound) seem to be working fine. It is only internal emails affected.

I have searched all over the internet and cannot find a good solution.  Most refer to GFI Mailessentials which we do not have.  The only spam filter we use is IMF and they are not ending up there.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

hi,

this sounds like you have an issue with IMF in exchange, mails are going to badmail folder and IMG uses that behaviour.  Completely disable IMF for testing purposes and see if the problem is still there.  IF it is get back to me.

Is this server fully patched? Badmail functionality was disabled in Exchange 2003 SP1, so there is no reason why the messages should be going to badmail at all unless someone has enabled the functionality.

i do know IMF wasn't intended to work on local mail but i still advice to complelty disable it temp to see if it fixes the issues.

Well I disabled IMF and it didnt change anything. And yes i'm pretty sure IMF is only for email coming in from outside.

About the badmail functionality, it is disabled, however it still says its going there.  I actually enabled it through the registry and the messages are going there but I can't see anything in them to help me figure out why they are going there.

The server is fully up to date with patches.  I installed a bunch last week and since I've never had a problem before like this.  I'm thinking maybe one of the updates had something to do with it.

Oh and about 3rd party products.  The only thing installed on the server that could cause a problem is AVG Antivirus.  But i disabled the email scanning and it didnt help any.

go to regedit

HKLM\CCS\SERVICES\MICROSOFT\MSExchange IS\virus scan.

set background scan -0
proactive scan -0
enable-0

restart the smtp service..

i am sure this could be a 3rd party application

Well I think it was the AVG.
I think it is the Web Shield portion of AVG 8.5 Network Edition

So far i've gone through several tests and I've received all the emails.

I'll have to monitor this for a while, but for right now things are looking good.

I had AVG 7 on this server for a long time with no issues.  And I upgraded to 8.5 not too long ago when they finally dropped all support and updates for version 7.

Well.. seems to be the actual Resident Shield that is doing it.

This version of AVG (network edition) is not supported for servers, therefore It is understandable to have problems.  I just wasnt expecting it since version 7 never gave me any problems for so long.  But now I understand the benefit of purchasing the server edition.
