IE8 cross domain links won't open

Hi All,

Upgraded to IE8 a while back and seems like when I try to access a link that's not on the same domain IE8 refuses to do anything.  (Can't open in tab, can't open in new window, won't go in same window).  Can keep clicking it but nothing happens.

I can copy the shortcut, paste it in the address bar, and continue, but is starting to get annoying.  Any ideas?

NOTE: Same domain everything seems to work fine, just when accessing other webpages does this happen.  (Or at least that's when I've noticed it)

Hey,

Some AV like AVG free has a link scanner which causes some links not to function correctly, alternatively there is a compatibilty viewibng option within IE8 which may also be causing this loss of functionality.

Try firstly to look at adding the site to the compatibility zone as per attached screen print :)

Hope this helps!

Hi Michael:

Compatibility view is set for all websites.  This was working in IE7 and only update was to IE8.  We use McAfee corporate edition.

Any other suggestions?

Hello Chap,

Are your LAN settings the same as they were within IE7?
Do you need to access web content via proxy?

Have you got any helpful ;-) toolbars installed  in IE8 such as Google, or Yahoo etc?  They may be stopping you.

Have you also reset the internet settings on the Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, Restore Advanced settings and Reset buttons?

update:

Tried going to cnn.com, clicked on "Man builds his own electric car", but still not any expected behavior.    I can now ctrl + click to get it in a new tab.  But open in new window option does nothing.  Clicking on link does nothing.

A posting on another website I have read suggests removing Flash and all Java versions, then re-installing them.

Not sure if you want to try this, but it worked for another person with a similar problem.

no dice.

I actually tried the link when both flash and java uninstalled (installed after), either way still same behavior.  Even upgraded to Vista SP2 RC, same behavior.  Going to see if there's a repair option.

I ended up just uninstalling with the following command found on Microsoft's website:

FORFILES /P %WINDIR%\servicing\Packages /M Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-8*.mum /c "cmd /c echo Uninstalling package @fname && start /w pkgmgr /up:@fname /norestart"

Tried re-installing but the same behavior was noticed.  Back to IE7 for me.
