Outlook 2007 spellcheck is graying out

I have a user with a Dell Inspiron 1501. He has win xp with office 2007. When he tries to send an email the automatic spellchecker comes up. When it finds an error it starts to allow him to change it then all options gray out. I have tried deleting and rebuilding his outlook profile to no avail. I have attempted re installation and the only thing i havent tried is to reimage his pc which i REALLY do not want to do. Can anyone help with this??

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Try running outlook in safemode and see if it still happens. It could be one of the add-ons causing the problem.

I tried that and it does the same thing. This is one of the weirdest things ive ever seen Outlook do. It briefly shows as able to change it then the undo edit button highlights and everything else grays out. IN regular or safe mode.

Did you install the Office Suite or just Outlook?

Is the spellcheck in Word working?

I have already tried the registry hack to fix it and that did not do it.

The spellchecker in word works on the fly but when you do a spellcheck on the whole document thats when it does this weird graying out thing.

I found the source of the problem. of the problem, i had hit some links out on google and found some had had problems with the touchpad mouse on the laptop. So i tried swapping the hdd out on a model that was the exact same, the graying out problem went away. So this issue is resolved and anyone else that has a similar problem, from what i read most people would order a new touchpad mouse and that would fix the problem and they are not that expensive from what i read.

Sorry I wasn't able to come up with a solution for you. I am glad you were able to find the culprit and fix it though :)
