I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. test it first on another PC, it may be a bad drive, or extaernal case, or cable...

You may need to try it with a powered USB hub.  Make sure your next drive letters are available for USB drives to use.

then it is possible that the usb section is bad, caused, by hard or soft.
to determine if the usb is ok (hard) you can run from a parallel install, or from a live cd, like Knoppix :
ftp://ftp.uni-kl.de/pub/linux/knoppix/KNOPPIX_V5.1.0CD-2006-12-30-EN.iso
and test if the usb works

Boot with a Knoppix CD http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html to see if it is your hardware or software.  If it works with Knoppix, it's a software problem, likely your OS driver.  In that case, delete the USB driver in device manager and reboot.  It should reinstall automatically and hopefully fix your problem.

Sorry, nobus - for some reason, I didn't see your post - I wonder if there was a system problem, because I usually do read everyone's post before I comment.
