Optimization VS. Standards

I am learning Action script 3.0 I have never programed before I am learning AS and would like to know what is the best way to go about it the optimization world or the standards world. They dont always agree with each other. There can sometimes be a trade off for performance over readability and organization or vice-versa.

Can anyone tell of any good books or sites that talk about  Optimization and Standards for writing AS 3.0

If you are learning, than I'd say standards. It's always best to know how and why you're breaking rules, rather than just doing it.

If given the choice, I always would choose standard and readability as prinicples. Using lots of shorthand, not commenting code, and hacking together solutions is only going to hurt you in the long run.

If the project is truly a one off, never to be touched again then I might bend, if time was an issue.

Also if you are just starting out - develop good habits from the start. Old bad habits are harder to break. :)
