Black screen after bootup. How do I get to desktop, access data.

When booting my Dell Precision 6300 - core 2 extreme, computer, I see the usual Dell startup screen. After that the screen goes black, showing only the mouse-cursor which I can move around on the screen.
I have then tried to start the computer in the various safe modes, with the same end-result.
I have then tried to boot the computer, while tapping F12, entering the Bios setup.
Here I have tried to use some of the alternative boot sequences (and restoring to factory setup afterwards) without success. Same end result.
I have tried fast boot and thorough boot etc. but...
There is an option to Load the factory defaults for all setup fields. I have not tried this so far, as it overwrites any changes I might have made.
Of course I wonder if the hard drive has given up the ghost, but hope that someone may be able to help me.
Kind regards Jan
