XP Pro Workgroup Word Excel slow after new server

Hi All,
Just installed a new HP Proliant as a file server with XP pro - yes, I know server sw would be better but there are reasons.  8 workstations - usually no more than 4 in use & 3 network printers

The problem is that, although the new server is much better spec, opening word/excel files can be very slow & saving them too. Accessing the shared folder is fine as is actually browsing for the files.

Any settings/tools that could help in resolving this issue?

Not much on recommended file server settings for xp pro - do you have any?

Many thanks in advance.
Regards,

Andrew

If not settings have changed it may be a network card issue, try changing manually the network card speed settings on the HP in device manager, try 100mbps full duplex first (assuming your network is running at that speed) and go down from there, if their are auto negotiation problems then you would get the problems your describing.

Failing that also give this a try: http://www.petri.co.il/speed_up_network_file_copying_in_windows_xp.htm

Accessing word and excel through the network IS slow, especially when the files get bigger.
It would be better to copy the file and editing locally. Otherwise, it'll be a network issue like what's mentioned above.

Then again, installing XP Pro on a Proliant is definitely strange. If you're JUST using it as a file server, might wanna try installing Linux and setting up Samba.

Thanks for the comments - will have access to the server tomorrow & will try the nic issue or replace with a pci version.
The point is, file access with the previous server wasn't slow & a small word document shouldn't take 4-6 seconds to open.

The previous server had Office 2003 installed but the new one hasn't - shouldnt make a difference though.

All our office documents are hosted on our SBS server and we havent got any noticeable issues so I dont think its that KvChaos. the only "issue" with XP would be more then 5 people accessing a share but thats not a problem for you.

Thanks for your comments & interesting advice - which I will look into.

The major issue was settings in Kaspersky Internet Security - never seen KIS slow down file access by so much.

Thanks very much.
