Copying profiles to a new server

What's the best ways to copy profiles to a new server without copying all the junk (i.e. cookies and etc . . )?  And how do i do a mass update in AD of where the new profile is located?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

To change the profile path in AD, scripting aside, you can select all the users in one go in ADUC, properties, profile tab and enter the new UNC to the profiles, using %username% as a placeholder for the individual users' folders, e.g.

This will update all the paths accordingly.

With regards to copying them over, you would have to use a copy facility to specify the exclusions you want to apply. For example, you could use xcopy with the /exclude switch to exclude certain files/folders etc. Robocopy is another one you could look at.

Maybe you have some backup software which could do this? I use Backup Exec where you can be very granular in what files/folders you do backup, then redirect the restore to the new server.
