AD upgrade from 2000 to 2008

I'm going to upgrade AD server. I got a new box and SBS 2008 license. My current server Server 2000 with the Server 2000 license.
First is there a problem in changing from Server License to SBS license?
What is the best way to go about the this upgrade. Current Ad Server is also running Exchange which I'm planning to migrate to the new SBS box as well at a later date.
All help and suggestions are appreciated - Mark

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Don't believe it will migrate, wouldn't you want new hardware with SBS2008?

my new hardware is SBS2008 - my old hardware has Server 2000 and Exchange - which I think were a separate license.

sweet, then there should be no licensing problems..

I'd firstly set up the system fresh and port all your scripts and applications across.
Get all the desired services running firstly, then use ADMT (Active Directory Migration Tool) to migrate accounts via export and import, you can do the same with exmerge for exchange later..

Thanks for your response - Let me read more about the migration and I'm sure I'll have more questions then. Is there anything in particular I should be looking for or reading?

the problem is I'm not trying to migrate from SBS to SBS, I'm trying to migrate from Server 2000 to SBS.
I've a 2000 box with Exchange on it. I want to upgrade to a new box, make it DC in AD and at a later date move exchange to it. From what I've discovered so far I don't think it can be done from 2000 to SB 2008. Now I'm trying to make sure that I can move it to SBS - there are substantial $$$ over Server and Exchange licenses and we have only 5 employees in the office.

But they are not really compatible products..

If you are serious about migrating the windows server 2000 to SBS 2008, then those instructions are what you need to upgrade your AD and introduce a SBS2008 server into your domain.

But like I said, there is no planned migration support, so your at the bleeding edge...

There is however support for SBS 2000, so some confidence should be that they are at least compatible at some level..

What would be the best way to upgrade my 2000 AD 2008. Remember that I've exchange Server Running on the same box.

from the above link...
Migrating Microsoft Small Business Server 2000 to Windows Small Business Server 2008
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=b86e2af5-782b-4001-bf86-d872028a4619

This has all the steps required to upgrade the AD, start with:

To raise the domain functional level
then
To extend the Active Directory schema to allow Windows 2008 additional domain controller

Once again I'M NOT RUNNING SBS 2000 - I'm running SERVER 2000.

mgitAuthor Commented:
yes the plan is to do the exchange later after the AD etc is all sorted out.

Ok, Your running Server 2000, ok..
How is that a problem? it still has AD...

Are you running it in Mixed mode or 2000 Native?
Cause it still needs to be upgraded, maybe this doc will gain more acceptance..

That's what I'm trying to find out. All links talk about the upgrade or migration from SBS to SBS - I'm trying to move from Server 2000 to SBS. IS that a problem? THanks for the article I'm going to read it tomorrow.
