Can you use usb mouse? if so, it is working. I would test the usb stick on other PC to verify it works ok first.
Check in Device Manager and usn entries there see if any yellow mark?

Hi Punky
No, mouse does not work, the optical light comes on and both usb stick and mouse work on another machine.  Device manager is clean, ie no exclamation marks.

if it does not work on a fresh install, you have bad hardware.
any errors in device manager ?
i suppose you did install all the motherboard drivers ? here they are :
http://support.euro.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=uk&l=en&s=gen&ServiceTag=&SystemID=WRK_PNT_P4_360&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=

you can also test if a PCI to usb card works
Hi nobus

Yes i did install the chipset drivers, there are 2 sets of usb's, 2 on the front and 5 on the back,  if it was hardware i would not expect both sets not to work, or an i wront with that assumption?
