how do I make save & SaveAs

Hi I am able to save & read it back my ArrayList. This saving is under my SaveAs event handling. I want to make a Save optiion too. I have put
 if(path.length() == 0)
        {
            // Save the ArrayList and its object with their data as binary file
            myChoice = new JFileChooser();
            myChoice.showSaveDialog(this);
            path = myChoice.getSelectedFile().getPath();
        }
in my Save action performed. It is not working if I click on Save when the file is new. Here is my code. Thanks in advance.
private void mnuSaveActionPerformed(java.awt.event.ActionEvent evt)
    {
        if(path.length() == 0)
        {
            // Save the ArrayList and its object with their data as binary file
            myChoice = new JFileChooser();
            myChoice.showSaveDialog(this);
            path = myChoice.getSelectedFile().getPath();
        }

        try
        {
            ObjectOutputStream outstream = new ObjectOutputStream(new FileOutputStream(path));
            outstream.writeObject(myList);

            //dataDisplay.append("Array written to disk file;" +path + '\n');
            outstream.close();
            JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null, "Your file is saved successfully");
        }
        catch(IOException err1)
        {
            JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null, "Sorry, " + err1.getMessage());
        }
    }

    private void mnuSaveAsActionPerformed(java.awt.event.ActionEvent evt)
    {
        // Save the ArrayList and its object with their data as binary file
        myChoice = new JFileChooser();
        myChoice.showSaveDialog(this);
        path = myChoice.getSelectedFile().getPath();
        try
        {
            ObjectOutputStream outstream = new ObjectOutputStream(new FileOutputStream(path));
            outstream.writeObject(myList);

            //dataDisplay.append("Array written to disk file;" +path + '\n');
            outstream.close();
            JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null, "Your file is saved successfully");
        }
        catch(IOException err1)
        {
            JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null, "Sorry, " + err1.getMessage());
        }
    }

what do you initialise path to?
that test should perhaps be:

        if(path==null)
