first, restart the CA agent services on the SQL server and attempt a backup.

if it still fails with same error, then in the SQL agent configuration  - increase the value for Max VDI wait time.

also search for SQLVDI.DLL on the SQL server, browse to this location via command prompt and give the command:
regsvr32 sqlvdi.dll

now attempt a backup and let me know the result.

Hi
after I restart the CA agent service in the SQL server. Able to backup some of the SQL satabse now. But still encounter the same error for 1-2 database.

The current Max VDI wait time is set as "9000000", do i need to change to what value?

Thanks for the help.

the errors indicated a VDI time, you can add a couple of Zero's (900000000) to the value in agent configuration... then restart the agent service & try a backup.

May be those 1-2 databases are larger than the others and the time it takes for the SQL VDI to start dumping the data for this to the agent is taking more than expected..

please verify if you have set the VDI wait time for backups appropriately:

https://support.ca.com/irj/portal/anonymous/kbtech?searchID=TEC480316&docid=480316&bypass=yes&fromscreen=kbresults

if persists, attach the 'activity log' for this sql backup job.

The errors encountered on arcserve are similiar to the following:
E8604 Failed to start backup. (DBNAME=xxx, EC=xxx:[SQL Server] szSqlState = 08S01,fNativeError = 0, errMsg = [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Communication link failure)

Btw, the backup host is on a server using arcserve R12 whereas the sql server being backup is on another server installed with the arcserve sql agent.

Is the a need to restart the sql server or sql services? or restart the backup host server?

Hello Wfloke,

If it happens with any specific database, please run the native SQL Backup on the SQL server to make sure it runs fine.

Also check for any MSSQLSERVER errors in the Application log in Windows Event Viewer on the SQL Server.

Do make sure that you have sufficient free space on the SQL server before running backups.
