Domino mail.box getting corrupted

for the last 2 weeks, our company's mail.box has been getting corrupted at the end of the week (Fridays). At the same time, 2 weeks ago, we also started doing a Veritas backup of the entire domino folder, which is done every weekday @ 11pm.

Could Veritas cause mail.box to get corrupted. Would it also affect the log.nsf files? because on the 1st week when we did the full backup, the log.nsf got corrupted over the weekend.

Are there any LIVE files in the domino directory that is not advisable to be backed-up?

Could you give us the Release or Version numbers of all software involved, so we can find out if their features are compatible?

Any LIVE files? No, it is "MANY live files". Domino has a write-behind cache, so you cannot back up databases without special software, like ArcServer or SYmantec Backup Exec with the Agent for Lotus Domino Server.

I agree. You need to have the right Agent or connector for Domino to handle open files  or to shut down th Domino service during the backup.

All databases are held open by domino.

More accurately: any server database can be held open, i.e. in an incomplete state, on the Domino server.

FYI, for the last couple of years, the company was only backing up user's email dB & there was no issue.  It's only recently, my supervisor thought it would be better to backup the entire Domino directory instead of just the mail folder in the directory.

Lotus Domino Server 6.5,
Veritas Backup Exec 9.1 (1. Backup Exec for Windows Server - installed
                                          2. Agent for Lotus Domino - Installed
                                          3. Advance Open File Option - INstalled)

I am currently in the midst of reading up the Veritas manual to get a clearer picture.
FYI, i'm not sure if this information is important but we're backing up user's dB on tape.

Tape? Hmmm, could indeed be the clue... Tape is  s l o w ... And Domino might really need the mailbox.

A question again: how many mailboxes do you have? You might set it to 2 or 3, it will improve performance and it might help in this case: if mail1.box is backed up, the other one is still usable.

we only have 1 mail.box. currently, we've gone back to backing up only user's email database. so far, it's not been corrupting.

when u say create a couple of mail.boxes, will they work simultaneously?
so, while backing up mail1.box, mail2.box will be taking over?

Most Domino servers run a lot smoother using more than one mail.box. If it works better for the backup as well I don't know, but you might try that easily.

if so, did you create the additional Mail.box ??? and if you have created it is the additional mailbox getting curropted too ????

lepak,,,,,, Did you try what I suggested recently?????
I have one more suggetion in order to make an isolation for the justifications ..... And this suggetion is to stop the services of the netbackup on the domino server which will stop the backup on Friday and observe if the Mail.box is going to be curropted .

my supervisors are not very keen on having another mailbox & their consultant has not approached them with this idea either. our mail.box hasn't been getting corrupted in the last 2 months. we have resorted back to backing up only the user's databases and other databases. we've decided not to backup the whole directory coz it may cause problems again.
i will be looking 4ward 2 learning your alternative step in the near future.

Am I too blunt if I say that your supervisor(s) need
1/ to trust you, and us, and the Help database
2/ a Domino Administrator training
3/ a better consultant (don't hesitate to call me ;-))

All there is to it is setting that parameter to 2 or 3 and try. Do you really have to have his/their approval first, for everything??

Can you confirm that you have the release of the backup software matches the Domino release you are running?
Would it be possible to reinstall the backup software?
