Removing directories from tar file

Hi

I have a bunch of tar files from an old web server.  The internal file structure of each tar file  is similar to
home/a/b/abwebsite/httpdocs/file1
home/a/b/abwebsite/httpdocs/file2
home/a/b/abwebsite/httpdocs/dir1/file1
home/a/b/abwebsite/httpdocs/dir1/file2

When I extract to the current directory, I get the whole directory structure, i.e. ./home/a/b/abwebsite etc
I would like to extract from the website name, so that the extract creates ./abwebsite/....

Is tar able to start extracting from a subdirectory like this?
If not, what would be a good way to do this - bear in mind that all of the tar files have different directories after home, e.g.
home/c/h/charliesbar
home/z/o/zoobar

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

tar has nothing built in to implement your strategy. Extract all the tar files in a common directory and tar them anew as a single archive
