Hyperlinks in Word 2007 Wont Open

I have a user who is continually getting generic error message when she tries to Ctrl+ click on hyperlinks in Word documents to check their accuracy.  Whenever she clicks on a link she gets a message window that says "An unexpected error has occurred."  We click ok and that's it.  No other information.  I've tried doing spyware checks, repaired her office install, made sure IE is her default through the Set Program Access and Default, etc.  She's had Office for a few months and is just now having this problem.  Any ideas?

Please check the log files and post any pertaining ones.  Have you reinstalled Word?  Have you terminated the Virus service then tried opening it?

This continues to be a puzzling issue and is affecting multiple end-user desktop computers. Here's what we've tried so far as separate steps, reverting the computer back to original configuration after each failed attempt:

* terminated ESET antivirus processes from running / uninstalling ESET antivirus altogether  (still happens)
* giving the user machine administrative priveleges (this FIXES it, but obviously granting these priveleges is not ideal for security and not how we manage our desktop systems on our network)
* running "repair" from Add/Remove Programs for Microsoft Office 2007. ( this temporarily fixes the issue, but twice now it has returned in a matter of days)

Nothing appears in the event viewer on the system for the "unexpected error".   We haven't fully uninstalled and reinstalled Word since this affecting more than one computer.. perhaps the result of a recent microsoft update? Unsure at this point.

Just this week we found a solution to this problem ourselves that would be good to have documented on EE. Microsoft recently released this KB article that solved our problem:
