Toshiba Satellite Laptop goes to sleep and won't wake up

After an hour or so my laptop seems to go to sleep and won't wake up.  This has been happening for a while.  Now when I force it to shut off and restart the sensipad mouse is frozen.

Any thoughts?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

1) DId you try without the battery ?

2) Have you tried to use a bootable Linux Live CD ( Ubuntu, Knoppix ) as a test to see if it is hardware or software ?

I hope this helps !

The usb mouse worked.  I took out he battery.  Do I need to let it "die" for it to reset?  Is there a setting for the touch pad in the bios?  I looked buy I didn't see anything.
