Issues with Canon DR1210c Scanner and Vista

Hi guys.  I have a client who bought two new HP laptops with Vista Home Premium on each.  He has a four month old Canon DR1210c scanner that works fine on his old XP Pro boxes but we can't get it to work on his new laptops.  Either one.  We have downloaded the latest Vista drivers from the Canon website and searched the KB with no luck.  Not a lot of information about issues on the web either.  we have tried all USB ports on both laptops with no luck.
The scanner displays a communications error but the laptop says the scanner is ready for use.

I am a little stumped.

Any ideas?

It turns out he was running 64 bit Vista instead of 32.  Downloaded the correct drivers for 64 bit and it worked right away.  Thanks!

it turns out it was Vista 64 bit and those were the drivers I needed.
