asked on

setup a secondary domain controller problem

PDC1: Windows 2003 Enterprise SP2
BDC2: Windows 2003 Standard SP2

Hello Everyone,

When I add 2nd PDC as a backup one, I got this error message:

"The operation failed because:
The Active Directory Installation Wizard cannot continue because the forest is not prepared for installing Windows Server 2003. Use the Adprep command-line tool to prepare both the forest and the domain. For more information about using the Adprep, see Active Directory Help.

The version of the Active Directory schema of the source forest is not compatible with the version of Active Directory on this computer."

I think this problem cause because I have different Windows OS on each box, Is it true?
Can you give me your professional advice?

Thank you for your Help,
Arron.

From a domain/forest point of view, there is no difference between 2003 Standard and Enterprise. Judging by your description, there should be no problem.

Is your new DC running 2003 R2? If so, this is your problem, as the AD schema needs to be extended before you can promote this machine into your domain as a domain controller

Yes, the new DC running 2003 R2. Can you let me know how to  extend current AD schema?

I cannot run adprep.exe /forestprep on windows 2003 r2 node, this box is not yet a domain controller . Should I make it a domain controller? but this doesn't make sense because this is the box I would like it to be a BDC. Right now it just a blank box which has windows install but not yet a DC.

Regards,
Arron.
