Sharepoint - Assign another IP address?

I've just installed Sharepoint services 3.0 on windows server 2003.  I've done 3 things:

I've added a second IP address to the server.

In IIS  I've changed the share point site from (All Unassigned) to the new IP Address

I've created a host A record on my DNS server for intranet.domainname.local

This is a 2 parter:

1) After doing these changes I can't browse to the website from the IIS console.  Also putting in the IP address to a web browser I get a security login box appear.  After putting in the domain admin credentials I get a "Page cannot be found".  Reverting the IP address back to (All Unassigned) instantly solves this problem.

2) Once number 1 is sorted I would like to see all sites appear as intranet.domainname.local/sitename.  Have I done enough for this to be the case?  Is there any other configuration steps involved?

Sorry, I'm a total noob to IIS and sharepoint!

Cheers
Scott

Hi Scotty

Did you put a host header address in when creating the web application? this will configure IIS to display the web app using the specific address intranet.domain.local.

Once you have this web app you then create sites under the web app, http://intranet.domain.local/site1.
