"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

There appears to be a hotfix available here:;en-us;833167

But you could also re-enable the feature.  Is there a specific reason Shadow copy is disabled?

Another thought, sometimes backup software uses shadow copy to back up locked or in use files.  Are you using Backup Exec?

I don't think you need it enabled to use BE it but if I remember right there is a check box in the selection list to back up "shadow copy components" and if it is checked, it is trying to use the feature.  This allows VSS enabled apps such as SQL and Exchange to use the VSS snapshots and makes for a faster backup.  It is a handy service anyway, I would probably turn it on?
Here is a whitepaper on VSS & BE 12:
