Visual Studio 2008 hangs when opening remote website

Hello,

I am having a problem opening a site that we maintain via visual studio.  Normally we open the website in Visual Studio by selecting "Open Website... > Remote Site..." and then typing the URL.  We attempted to migrate this site to VSS recently to fit into a new development process we are using, but after multiple hiccups we've decided that this project is far enough along that it's probably best to do it the old way and only try and fit new projects into the new development process.  Now when trying to open the site the old way the project hangs at the 'Opening the Web site 'http://www.ourdomain.com'.'  If we just leave visual studio open on this screen it eventually open after 30 minutes or so, but for obvious reasons that sucks.  I've already installed the hotfix at http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/KB958094 with no luck.

Is there a way that I can see in more detail exactly what is going on and is causing the site not to open?  I don't really know where any log files might be stored and the Event Viewer doesn't have anything for Visual Studio.

Thanks,

Mike

Are you able to open the website directly in reasonable time?

CodeCruiser,

Yes the site opens just fine via a web browser.  I also have zero problems accessing the files via an FTP client (not FTP in Visual Studio).  The problem actually corrected itself this time after a restart but that is the first time a restart has ever fixed it.  I have a feeling that it is some file-access issue with some file that it is trying to 'Get from the web...' that causes it to hang, but without any sort of log or debug capabilities I can't know for sure.  We have similar problems like this occur from time to time with other sites we maintain via HTTP and I would really like to find the concrete solution for it.

Thanks,

Mike

I think VS uses FrontPage extensions to retrieve files and the issue could be files being in use by IIS.

Yes, now that you mention it the FPEs seem like they might be a likely cause of the problem.  Have you or anyone else experienced this issue in relation to FPEs?

I am not sure if FPE causes the issue but i have experienced the hanging behaviour of VS especially when open web from the WAN.

Then it brings me all back to my original question, is there some way I can ellicit more information from VS on what is going on behind the scenes while loading a web page, or will I just have to chalk it up to a random annoyance that I will just have to deal with case by case?

One option is to try and use Frontpage to open the same web and see if it takes similar time then it means the problem is on the server end otherwise the problem could be with the VS.
