Occasional startup error- Shared Memory realm does not exist

We are running Oracle 10.2.0.2.0 on a windows 2003 server. We have a script that shuts the database down every night, makes a cold backup and then restarts it. About once a month we get the error ORA-01034: ORACLE not available and ORA-27101: shared memory realm does not exist
If I connect via sqlplus I am unable to start the database but rebooting the server cures it.
Most of the most of what I can find online points to this problem happening all of the time not occasionally. I have tried adding physical RAM and changing memory parameters.

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

When this happens again, check the Oracle services to see if they are running.
Then check the value of your ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID

Usually I see that error when ORACLE_HOME or ORACLE_SID are not set or are incorrect (in the environment that is running the startup or sqlplus session)

It is possible the ORA-01034 is caused by your running a sql query against the database while the instance is down. Check your scripts.

Also, check the alert log for history to see if anything odd is going on and not letting the database start, and make sure your script is sequentially correct in that it only runs when the database is in the correct state.

mrjoltcola- I have checked this and the services are running. I have seen many references to this problem being cause by ORACLE_HOME or ORACLE_SID being incorrect but it doesn't make sense to me in this case since we only see the problem about once a month
I have looked over the logs and thst script and can't find anything there.

There is one other odd thing with this database that MAY or may not be related.
Enterprise manager gives an error java.lang.Exception: No Such Target. I have fixed this problem temporarily by playing with the time zone settings but am unable to fix it permanently. I believe it needs to be patched, we do not have metalink access as Oracle is supplied by our vendor. I have seen some evidence that the TZ issue can cause a ORA-27101 but once again, why once a month?

When, specifically, do you receive the error? During which commands? It could be the script is trying to shutdown an instance that is already down. ORA-01034 happens when you issue a statement to the database while it is down or does not exist.

When the database tries to restart after the backup completes. After that any attempt to start it results in the same error

Question Alexssi, is this oracle db on a cluster or stand alone server?

It's a stand alone server

So when this happens, how do you end up starting it finally?

You may try posting your script here. Again, this error happens often when a script attempts an operation against a "down" instance.

A reboot works every time, don't even need to start it manually, it comes up on it's own. I'll try to post the script tomorrow from work
