How to establish pipes/connection from programme to Vista

Computer.Dell Precision M6300, Intel Core 2 extreme, with Windows Vista Ultimate.
After experiencing a BLACK schreen, where only the cursor was visible, and active, I received the instructions shown in the attachment.
This ALMOST returned my computer to its original working capacity.
However, I cannot open Microsoft Office, iTunes, QuickTime player, Open Office, Google Earth any more. When I try I get a message saying: This action is only valid for products that are currently installed. Or: This update package could not be opened. Verify...........and verify that this is a valid Windows Installer update package. Or: A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

Other programs, like the ones mentioned below, work fine.
Bentley Microstation
PC Draft
Google Sketchup
Mozilla Firefox
Mozilla Thunderbird
and others
A rendering program, Artlantis Render 2, could work, if Quicktime could be opened, as it uses some QT properties.

I have tried to un-install and re-install Quicktime, without success.

Can anyone out there help me re-connect these broken links. I have a feeling that the tampering with regedit may have caused the problems.

Kind regards,
Jan U

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

1) What has this problem description to do with pipes?
2) Please see wether returning to the original value in regedit will reenable the programs or return you to your original problem. If b ack to orig. problem, try to start the automated startup repair process from the setup dvd.
3) The message "This action is only valid for products that are currently installed" indicates that the windows installer service gets triggered at program launch but cannot associate the MSI-Package GUID to an MSI package cached at the local computer. I don't see a reason for why this is happening. As a reinstall did not help, I recommend to undo the reg.-change and look for an alternate solution.

thank you for your advice. However, after trying a number of possibilities, I've decided to re-format and reinstall everything, from system to programmes.
