Outlook Freezing Periodically

I have several users experieincing issues with Outlook with the following symptom in a domain.

Users will click emails in there inbox and one time Outlook will function normally and the next time it will freeze for a couple minutes while retrieving an email.

Users have both Office 2003 and 2007 so versioning makes no difference also cached mode is turned off on systems so users can to email classifications.

We also incorporate symantec enterprise vault.  However I don't think this is the issue as the emails in question trying to be viewed are not archived emails.

Could this be an issue with the domain controller?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

More likely your Exchange 2007 servers are struggling with the amount of RPC requests they are recieving.

You need to start on your Exchange servers, looking at things like Disk Queue length and RPC operations / second to see if there is any trend. Likely you will find that somewhere there is a bottleneck meaning that your Exchange servers are struggling (this could just be that you have many users all in online mode, which always generates a lot more RPC requests).

If you enable Cached mode on a test client, do you experience the same issues? I would guess at not, but it may be worth a check just incase :)

Cached mode helps a little bit from some tests but the issue still is there.

I forgot to mention we have Exchange 2003 not 2007 which maybe a help.

Same thoughts then, load up perfmon and see if you can see where the bottleneck is.
