MS Outlook Inbox Problem

Our company uses an exchange server (2003 version) to deliver email to employees.  Several of these employees also synch their email to their blackberrys using blackberry enterprise server.  Both Exchange and Blackberry Enterprise Server are running on the same server, which is running Windows SBS 2003.  The issue we are having is that these users are turning on their pcs and getting inbox updates of over 700MB.  After the update completes, however, there are no new messages in the box.   Fortunately, we have seen that the only users getting this update are those using both Outlook and Blackberry to manage their mail.  Could this be the cause, or just a coincidence?

If the emails have been read using Blackberry, they will not show as new emails in outlook.

I figured that may be the case, but they  are getting over 700 MB of email into their box every time they restart, and what it seems to be doing is basically re-delivering their mail.  so the 700 MB they are being "updated" with was already read (with either outlook or blackberry). is there something in outlook that would cause their email to be re-delivered?
