How to decommission FE Exchange 2003 server?

This is a Windows 2003 AD domain, with 2 Exchange 2003 servers in FE/BE topology. Due to the system instability and short of spared hardware, I'm thinking of decommission FE server and leaves on Exchange 2003 server to operate.

Any proper steps that I can follow?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

If the server is a frontend then you do not have to do anything other than use add/remove programs to remove Exchange.

However if it was the first server then you should ensure that you follow the process in this KB article, just in case: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=822931

Do you have OWA configured on your front end server?
Make sure that it is rehomed to point to the backend server before decommissioning the FE
