Windows XP SP3 Installation issues.
Hello, Everyone
I am having an issue installing Service pack 3 after a repair install of windows XP professional.
It all started when my system crashed after installing and running HULU. I have searched everywhere for similar errors but i cannot find anything.  I started Hulu app. and was watching a tv episode when all of a sudden bluescreen apeard. I cannot remember the error it gave me. after that i had to restart the computer. after the Windows Splash screen it just kept restarting the computer over and over again. I coudn't even go into safemode to try uninstall the hulu ap. so id decided to do a repair install with my windows xp cd and did the whole process. Also after successfully logging into windows i also try to update using the windows update icon and it wouldn't install updates so i did a reregistration of the Wups2.dll and i was able to install all updates for SP2 but now when trying to install service pack 3 it gives me the following error: Service Pack 3 Setup Error : "The File or directory is corrupted and ureadable" then it just gives me the option to press okay. I have tried the manual installation which gives me the same error.  Any ideas?

This is possibly a result of corrupt updates, which you can remove...

http://forums.techarena.in/windows-update/902026.htm

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop
(Stopping the service will take a moment)

2. Delete the contents of the Download folder:

Start > Run > (type in) %windir%\SoftwareDistribution > [OK]
Open the Download folder and delete its contents
Close the window.

3. Start the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Start
(Starting the service will take a moment)

If that doesn't work try the following:-

http://forums.techarena.in/windows-update/786231.htm

Click Start, select run and type the following (pressing okay after each one):-

net.exe stop wuauserv

regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll

net.exe start wuauserv

Try WU again.

Otherwise follow this article to reinstall the WU Client -

erickzavala--Try running Error Checking (Chkdsk)

erickzavala--You could also try Event Viewer to get more info
Event Viewer (Start|Administrative Tools|Event Viewer). Click on "System" in the left panel. Do you see RedBall error icon(s) timestamped at the exact time the problem occurred?   If so, click on the RedBall. The first message will have some data on what the problem is, but usually it is not too easy to understand. Click the blue go.microsoft.com link.  Send a report to Microsoft.  Another window should open (though it may take some time) which may offer some more understandable info and maybe even a solution.

erickzavala--You may not like the "Fix" mentioned in this reference

You guys may have missunderstood the question, maybe i didn't express it correctly. After carrefully trying all your suggestions I'm still in the same situation. After watching the Service pack 3 installation process i have come to the conclusion that there is something wrong with the registry. Becuase the error happens when it is backing up the registry. that's when it gives me the error. Also i have cheked the event viewer as suggested and there isn't much information. I have attached a file with the information from the event viewer. I have run registry mechanic but didn't fix it either. I know the SP3 installation is not corrupt because i just installed the manual  version on another drive i'm configuring. I am trying not to have to reinstall the operating system because it is about a 24hour job installing all the programs back. I have good backups of the important stuff. So, if no other suggestions i'm gonna have to format the drive and reinstall the OS. Thanks for all suggestions.

erickzavala--You did not follow the procedure I posted for getting all the info out of Event Viewer.  You still have another one or two windows to see after you click the blue go.microsoft link.

erickzavala--We may be in a situation here where one fix leads to another problem. And at the end you have done a lot of work, the problems are not fixed (in fact they get worse) and you have to reformat.
Which of the links in my last post gave the error?
There are potential fixes for your latest problem,
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/1054246526
https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/22074144/This-application-has-failed-to-start-because-clb-dll-was-not-found.html
But maybe it would be wiser to try a System Restore to a date before ALL the Problems started.  However I am not sure you will have System Restore points after a Repair Install.
And you could scan your PC with your antivirus and antispyware programs (using latest reference defintion files).  Delete what is recommended.  And then you may want to

P.S.  It is regedit.exe,  not rededit.exe, but I see you must have typed it correctly based on the error window title.

I fiixed the regedit.exe problem just by copying the clb.dll from another harddrive that has Windows XP pro installed. But yeah, there maybe more .dll's files missing. and i don't think i'll be able to find every single one of them. so i'm just gonna have to do a fresh install of the OS. I hate that, this is the 4th time in one month that i had to do this on the same computer. Yeah, the system restore crossed my mind and i checked but  it didn't have any restore points before the repair install. Which backup software is pretty good to back-up a whole system?

Well, I thank all of you that helped with suggestions, specially jcimarron that took more time to help me. I believe jcimarron should be the one to receive the points. Unfortunently there were so many things wrong with the system that the best soulution was to fresh install the OS.  which is what i was trying to avoid, but it was inevitable.

jcimarron-I did have an antivirus before all this happened. Bitdefender 2009 is the antivirus i was using is it any good? I schedule a full system scan every other day before all this happened.  I have fully installed the OS and updated sucessfully. Now just the task of re-installing all the software...

Avatar of jcimarronjcimarron🇺🇸

erickzavala--Yes, Bitdefender 2009 is well regarded.  http://www.anti-virus-software-review.toptenreviews.com/

Microsoft Windows XP is the sixth release of the NT series of operating systems, and was the first to be marketed in a variety of editions: XP Home and XP Professional, designed for business and power users. The advanced features in XP Professional are generally disabled in Home Edition, but are there and can be activated. There were two 64-bit editions, an embedded edition and a tablet edition.
