I keep getting this error when i try to open my .vmdk file in VMware workstation.

Could not open virtual machine: F:\Server_Images\theprivate.com\theprivate.com.vmdk.
File "F:\Server_Images\theprivate.com\theprivate.com.vmdk" line 1: Syntax error.

Have you renamed your disks by any chance?

hi,

the possible reason why you get this error is when the vm was shutdown abruptly and the vmdk lck has not been released. Can you go into the folder "F:\Server_Images\theprivate.com\" and verify if you see a folder "theprivate.com.vmdk.lck" if so then you would need to delete that folder and then try starting up the VM.

The other possibility is that you have created a linked clone for the VM and the linked clone VM is online.

verify these and post back the VMx file and the files you see in the "F:\server_images\theprivate.com\

I have renamed the discs so I will try that. As for the lck, it is not in the folder. The only files in the folder are the original acronis image and the vmdk. And no it is not a linked clone.
when you say original acronis image was this vm backed up as a acronis image or did you try backing up a physical machine with acronis and then restored it.

anyhow as you have said you have renamed the disks we will wait for you update.

otherwise you can modify the VMX file with the renamed disk name.

I backed up a physical machine, then used acronis to convert to a vmware vm. I have tried the vmplayer as well as my vmware workstation and neither will even see the image when i browse to the location within the application. When i browse the drive itself, the files are there, they just wont play. I am going to do as suggested and will update shortly. Thanks for all the help.
