Hyper Threading on ECS P4S5A/DX+
Greetings,
I am having an issue enabling the Hyper Threading function in the AMIBIOS of my ECS P4S5A/DX+ (V5.1a) motherboard. This motherboard has a 533 FSB and an Intel Pentium 4 (Socket 478) 3.06 GHz HT processor. (I recently upgraded with the new processor). I also have 2GB of RAM and an AGP 4X 16MB ATi video card (next to be upgraded).
Here is the issue: When I enable the Hyper Threading function in the Advanced Setup of the BIOS, I am able to reboot and the computer beeps after completing its POST. However, immediately after that, my screen displays colored vertical "streaks" and the system locks up, requiring me to clear the BIOS and reset the machine. Without the HT function, I have no issues with the system.
What can I try? I have sent a message to the ECS support--the motherboard is still supported--but I am still waiting for a response. It seems that the video card is having issues with HT so would an upgrade to a more modern video card solve the issue? Please advise on anything else I could try so that I can use the HT functions of this processor.
Thank you in advance.

A couple thoughts ...
=> Are you using the most current BIOS? [v30402] If not, I would first install your older CPU that you KNOW works well with the board; then update the BIOS; and then install the new CPU. This may seem excessively cautious ... but a bad BIOS flash will destroy the motherboard, so it's best to be very careful when updating the BIOS.
=> Are you sure you're using a supported CPU? There are eleven different sSPec's for 3.06GHz P-IV's. Only 6 of those are supported by this board -- and then only with the v30402 BIOS. What's the sSpec for the CPU you're using?

Yes, I am using the most current BIOS.  How do I find the sSPEC fro the CPU?
The sSPEC is shown on the label on the box the CPU comes in, and is imprinted on the CPU.     Since the CPU is already installed, you can't easily find that ==> but the Family/Model/Stepping/Revi sion details should be enough to confirm whether or not it's a supported CPU.

Sorry the delayed response.  Here are the specs from the CPUID Data tab:
CPU Type: 0
CPU Family: F
CPU Model: 2
CPU Stepping: 9
CPU Revision: 2E
Does this help?

Thank you for the information.  Yes, I upgraded from a non-HT CPU, but I also reinstalled XP.  The system definitely runs faster, but I still cannot enable HT in the BIOS.  Running the Hyper Threading test utility from Intel shows that the processor is capable of supporting HT, but that the chipset and BIOS both show warnings.  This is strange, considering the BIOS recognizes the HT option and the motherboard is advertised as such.
At this point, is there anything else I can try? I am going to send one more message to ECS in the interim. Would it be best to simply purchase another Socket 478 motherboard that states definitively that HT is supported? This is so frustrating.
Thanks for you help thus far.

If you have the current BIOS (which you indicated you do), and the motherboard is supposed to support hyperthreading (which it is), then it SHOULD work !!     It's possible -- but VERY unlikely -- that the issue is (as you hypothesized in the question) caused by the video card ... but I doubt it.
I'd wait to see if ECS has any more suggestions (perhaps a reflash of the BIOS) ... but failing that switching to a better motherboard would likely resolve this ==> IF you can find a good socket 478 motherboard :-)

Components are those devices that are internal to a computer -- the PC boards, the central processor (CPU), the memory (RAM), disk and video controllers and so on.
