"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Depends on the format and if you're going to embed the player. For Flash (and free) JW Player and Flowplayer are the go -- now compatible with H.264. For wmv, of course it's WMP and for both H.264 and .mov it's Quicktome. The code comes with your choice of player -- whether to use embed code or object code. Probably Flash makes more sense these days.

Try BASS; Its not open source, but you can use it non commerically for free. I used it extensively for my univeristy final project and it is rock solid and easy to code.
