This usually happens if other important drivers are missing or haven't been installed yet. Always start with the chipset drivers. Then many intel and realtek soundcards require another driver installed before the actual driver. It's usually called something like UAA driver. So check the homepage of your manufacturer, get those drivers and install them before installing the sound driver.
