Hello Experts:

Microsoft Exchange Server is down :(    --- This is a sbs 2003 all in one box
(The bad news... I am fairly new to managing exchange server...)

All exchange services running, but no pc's connecting to email server...
Event 9175  has been happening all day. I am in the process of moving this client from one physical location to another, so I havent been paying much attention to email until about an hour ago. (been to busy moving)... I noticed noone could connect to email although they were on network. so I open ESM and look at Information store. The mailbox store has a red arrow. I tried to mount the store and now get all kinds of event messages, now wondering If that was a good idea...

event 9175 -- "The MAPI call 'OpenMsgStore' failed with the following error:
The Microsoft Exchange Server computer is not available.  Either there are network problems or the Microsoft Exchange Server computer is down for maintenance."

event 452 -- "Information Store (6304) First Storage Group: Database C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\mdbdata\pub1.edb requires logfiles 26233-26234 in order to recover successfully. Recovery could only locate logfiles starting at 26234

event 465 -- "Information Store (6304) First Storage Group: Corruption was detected during soft recovery in logfile C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\mdbdata\E00.log. The failing checksum record is located at position 919:478. Data not matching the log-file fill pattern first appeared in sector 3549. This logfile has been damaged and is unusable.

event 477 -- "Information Store (6304) First Storage Group: The log range read from the file "C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\mdbdata\E00.log" at offset 470528 (0x0000000000072e00) for 135680 (0x00021200) bytes failed verification due to a range checksum mismatch.  The expected checksum was 4048594890 (0xf150a7ca) and the actual checksum was 2068255008 (0x7b471120). The read operation will fail with error -501 (0xfffffe0b).  If this condition persists then please restore the logfile from a previous backup."

ievent 454 --information Store (6304) First Storage Group: Database recovery/restore failed with unexpected error -543.

This was supposed to be a simple move, no stress, everything going well and then BAM lol, now I have no idea what to do next, any help GREATLY appreciated !!  Do I run eseutil, and if so how exactly do I do that?

I have restarted all exchange services, and rebooted server twice. All the event messages came up as I tried to remount store. Since then, for the past half hour, all I see is event 9175...

Make sure the network settings are correct. 1 NIC or 2 NICs enabled on the server (RRAS providing gateway/router to Internet)?

Start --> Run --> NCPA.CPL [Enter]

Check your NIC settings to make sure that they are correct. IP, subnet, gateway, and DNS1: pointing to the server itself.

Make sure that the correct NIC is plugged into your network switch and that the lights are on and blinking. I take it clients are still able to access their network shares?

Run the CEICW, SBS Console --> To Do --> Connect to the Internet leaving the certificate portion alone. Make sure the correct Internet facing services are checked.

Was the server properly powered down or was it forcefully powered down by holding the power switch?

SBS 2003 can take anywhere up to 15 minutes, or more, to power down properly.

there is one nic, and the dns does point to itself, although i saw two addresses in dns --

192.168.168.3,  and the second 192.168.168.4   ...  (i took out the second)

so I opened up DNS and saw that  192.168.168.3 - 7 are reserved for this server?  (I didnt set this machine up, i inherited this client)

but settings all the same as before, same ip, gateway, everything internal still same.

Basically from the client pc's , i can browse shares on server, on the server I can ping everything, surf internet
Exchange has been working with these settings for years

I did just find out something critical however, now the client tells me exchange was down the day before the move. They assumed the airprt authority had pulled the plug.... so Imm am thinking this is not because of the move...

Were any updates applied prior to Exchange going down?

Are there any disk errors such as NTFS 55 or others in the event logs?

How are the backups?

it was powered down properly

Ithey have another server, an app server, has 4 nics :

192.168.168.4, 5, 6, and 7

but all up and running, app server has no connection issues

I am dealing with what was two Dell powerconnects 5324 switches on the rack... I had a crappy old beat up switch downstairs, so I took it out, took one of the 5324's off the rack (they were linked by fiber), and put one of them downstairs. Upstairs I have three servers, all connected now to the remaining Dell 5324.
9 cables total, Everything else is downstairs. But it just doesnt seem like its a network issue, becsuse the errors are coming from the exchange box itself, and I can get to it from the clients, and I can surf the internet from server etc...

I see that same 9175 mapi error --
"event 9175 -- "The MAPI call 'OpenMsgStore' failed with the following error:
The Microsoft Exchange Server computer is not available.  Either there are network problems or the Microsoft Exchange Server computer is down for maintenance.""
but its bizarre because it is the exchange server.  Other than that I see a gazillion server active sync erros from a user whos phone is trying  to connect.
I suspect the information store is corrupt.

Should I be concerned about this message:?
event 452 -- "Information Store (6304) First Storage Group: Database C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\mdbdata\pub1.edb requires logfiles 26233-26234 in order to recover successfully. Recovery could only locate logfiles starting at 26234

Well, new client, (approx a month or so).... so the good news is we have a backup of information store, bad news it looks like its from 4-11-08   :(   , arghhhh the day just keeps getting better lol.

I'm gonna go home now, everyone else gone now. I'll read that link you posted, see what utilities I can run. The good news is they just downsized, I can get the pst files from a handful of critical users. Just looks like tomorrow will be a long day... Thanks for the quick responses, I'll be on later tonight, If ya get any ideas they would be greatly appreciated. I'll post my progress as I figure out what is up. Thanks again philip!

You can use the above blog post to create a new store once you have exported to PST.

Make sure they are not using the POP3 Connector as it will still be downloading e-mail into the ether!

I have backed up all pst files manually, 12 users, and want to delete the current information store. Then create a new information store and simply reconnect the users and import pst back into pc's. I'd rather not use exmerge if possible, and Do I have to uninstall and reinstall exhchange server?

oh also, I have located the source of the errors, it is transaction log related. It seems the server was not shut down properly. I have tried for a couple of hours to run the eseutil commands but they all come back with errors.... this is why I want to just simply creat a new store as quickly as possible.

You can use the linked blog post to recreate the store and then import the mailboxes manually using the reverse of the method to import into Outlook.

If you can successfully run ExMerge, that would be the appropriate way to do it since the ExMerge will preserve the user mailbox experience.
