http redirection

Hi,

I want to redirect www.myurl.com/abc to www.myurl.com/index.php?name=abc by .htaccess.
( it can be www.myurl.com/jkfl too)

How do i do it ?

The following accepts and characters 0-9 a-z or _ and redirects it to index.php?name=<name here>
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule ^([0-9a-z_]+)$ /index.php?name=$1

No it didn't work after I create a .htaccess file with the above contents.
