i currently have asa550 running
asa version 7.0
asdm 5.0

i want to upgrade but as my first time need to know....
if i upgrade the asa image via asdm does it overwrite all my exsiting config/ruleset etc?
also
in the following articel it stated select tools>upgrade but in my version 5.0 asdm is says tools>upload image from local pc

so my main question is the exact process to follow as my end game is to get to asa v7.2 and asdm 5.2 so i can setup and use L2TP and will it overwirte my existing config?

Here's a Cisco article on how to upgrade:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6120/products_configuration_example09186a008067e9f9.shtml

No, your config will not get overwritten, it will stay the same.
No, uploading new images will not overwrite existing images.
