Mac spell check undelines everything!

On my new Mac, every word seems to be underlined for spelling errors.  I don't often make errors, but even common words are flagged.  What's going on?

In applications that support spell checking, you can open the Mac OS X Spelling panel to see additional options, including the ability to choose different dictionaries. In the application, open a window in which you can enter text, then choose Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Show Spelling and Grammar.

Make sure you're set to your language
