As the administrator I got a "system undeliverable" message saying the email could not reach it's intended recipients.  When I search the logs using message tracking, I find the email is from "<>".  Does anyone know what this means?

That just means it is a system message. Was the message from outside? Are you not using recipient filtering?
It may well have been a spoofed message that has NDRd back to your server.

Doesn't matter - it can be added via a third party tool, and I would suggest that you do so. Exchange 2000 cannot defend itself against directory harvest attacks.
