How would I mirror a database on the same physical server as well as on the same instance?

If not possible can I create a database mirror on the SAME server but on another instance?

You can't mirror to the same instance - because you can't have the same database name more than one time.
You can set it up to mirror to another instance on the same server, but I have to ask what you are trying to accomplish.  I don't understand the requirement to mirror to the same server.

Wilje:

Thanks that is what I expected.

In our environment, we have  production and testing as separate databases. I have to constantly be restoring backups of production to the testing dB. Instead, I would like to create a mirror using the production as the source and the testing as the target. I have all this on one server only.

I don't think a mirror is going to work for you.  A mirror is not accessible while you are mirroring, so you would have to break the mirror to make is accessible as a copy.  Once you do that, you would have to setup mirroring again.
That would be a lot more work than just scheduling a daily restore to a test database.
