Record screen using Applet or Flash

Hello Experts,

I need to record screen activities (full or specified region) with audio using some technology, I am looking for advises from Java and Flash experts. This will be recorded from a website.

Please help.

I am looking for solutions for my website, it has to be an applet plugin or a flash swf to do this.

I do not think this link is anywhere near to what I am looking for.
Thank you for your input.

I think you could integrate screen capture into your web page with this activeX component. It wouldn't support video or audio. Screen capturing video is extremely CPU intensive and so it would be hard to find something that does this in the form of an applet or activeX.

Flash is what I would look into first.  I don't know for sure it is supported or how well but it would be the easiest to implement since you wouldn't have to make it all yourself.

I do know there are ways this is done using Java applets.  A specific example I can think of is GoToMeetings' interface.  It uses the JRE and is able to at least record screen actions and audio.  From what Object's said I doubt this is something that is completely built in to Java though.  What they did may use lots of proprietary code and could be very hard to develop (they charge the monthly fees for a reason ;)).

An ActiveX solution is probably also an option but would still have the same concerns as an Applet.  That is why a Flash solution may be best.  However I believe its capture is through the PC's camera and so wouldn't work for screen capture or recording.  In other words Flash may just record what you show with your webcam.

I know some of this was mentioned earlier but hopefully I didn't duplicate another expert's post.  I did a quick read and didn't see anything exactly like what I said but let me know (and ignore it) if I am wrong.

If there is a question about any of this please let me know.  Sorry I can't be specific about how you can make it all but I haven't ever seen something that can be used to do all that and can be plugged into your site.  I know it is possible though so I hope this helps.

By the way ... if you really will pursue this then I would suggest not sticking just to a browser plugin, object or applet.  It would really be best if this could run independent of the browser.  Not only could you avoid some security or compatibility issues but the user wouldn't have to stick to the browser to control it.  Unless you will always just record browser related things it would seem to be a limitation to develop just for the browser.  I have an idea that is why Citrix went with Java for its GoTo_____ products (or at least GoToMeeting which we have been using lots lately).

As of now, it seems Flash and ActiveX are not going to help as flash will not do the screen recording best and ActiveX will not be platform independent.
I am looking for a Javabased solution which will run in browser like an Applet and I will think of run it as a Java application itself. Does that sound like the right direction?

Yes.  Because of Objects post I believe you will need to write most of this on your own but it would be what I would look at if I were trying to make a program like this.
