sync contacts in thunderbird and blackberry
Does anybody know how to set up contacts and calendar to synch between my computer (running Thunderbird/Lightning) and my Blackberry Pearl? I want to migrate away from Outlook because Thunderbird is superior in so many ways, but I can't figure out how to make the break if I can't synch my Blackberry. Email is not the issue -- that comes directly to both machines. It's only contacts and calendar I'm wrestling with. I tried Funambol, but that cut my Blackberry battery life by about 70%, even if the automatic synching was turned off.
Many thanks for any help you can provide.

You will need to install Outlook or use Outlook Express to sync your contacts and calendar with a BlackBerry.

Thanks, but that's the problem -- I'm trying to migrate away from the clunkiness of Outlook, and Outlook Express doesn't have much (if any) of a calendar. And keeping parallel calendars and address books seems like a lot of work. Any other suggestions?

Most of these referenced alternatives are out of date, and pretty limited. At least for addresses, I found the best alternative to be Zindus (open source) syncing between Thunderbird and Google, and then Google's own software for syncing between Google and Blackberry -- email and phone info comes through fine, but street addresses get a bit garbled in XML format, but that doesn't matter much since I don't send land mail from my blackberry anyway; addresses are still readable enough to get directions, etc.
