Expert Notify Thread - For those answering questions in the MS Access Zones

Hi Everyone,

This "question" is for those contributing in the MS Access Zone.  If your are not contributing as an Expert, please do not post comments here.  This question provides the ability for an Expert to ask for assistance from other Experts in getting member questions answered.

Experts:
The idea behind this "question" is to allow an easy means of getting other Experts and the Zone Advisor or Page Editor to look at something or discuss something.

It is a "notify* question in the sense that you initially only *subscribe* to the question (by using the "monitor" button), but *don't* post any comments.

When you want to communicate with the other Experts, you post a new comment in this question that might look something like this:

Subject: Expert Topic - Member needs help with a tough one

"Member xyz needs help.  Please see

<link>

AccessExpert"

All of us will then receive an e-mail notification (because we are subscribed to this thread) and can click on the link to find out what needs to be done or talked about.  Please do *not* post general comments or hold a discussion in this notify question.  Keep in mind that everyone receives an e-mail each time a comment is added and it takes longer for the page to load as it grows larger (some of us are still on dial-up).

So feel free to use this to talk about any Expert issues or items that are specific to the MS Access TA by opening another question and putting a link in here as a comment.  Keep in mind that anyone will be able to see these questions (both members and Experts).  When creating your question topic, make sure you use "Expert Topic" at the start of the question title.  This will make it easy for everyone to spot these questions.

The guy went from an Acc BE to a SQL BE. I'm thinking he's going to have to upgrade to ADO to pull off copying BE tables.

Anyone want to throw in their $0.02. I only have about $0.01 on ADO. ;-)

Here's one that should be pretty straightforward for VBA/ADO coding -- I have got to practice it -- It would be pick up data from a local Access DB and feed it into a SQL Stored Proc.

Have just been commenting on Access date handling issues, but now wonder if I'm raising unnecessary concerns. Is the problem liable to rear its ugly head at all if the dates are just being used within a form filter?

Hopefully someone is using Access 2007 and can help out with this. Guy is building an assets database and I suggested some changes to his asset movement file. He's trying to finish this app up and is a bit lost when it comes to doing things in code.
Seems like he is more then willing to try and do things, but he's really stuck. However without A2007, were doing a lot of back and form because I can't see all his field/control names.
What he needs to do is write a little code in the BeforeUpdate event of his main asset form. On that form, he has a combo to select the assets location. What needs to happen is if the location is changed, he needs to write a record out to a historical transaction table, which records some specifics about the move. That record also needs to be linked to the prior move as when looking at a move, he wants to see a from / to display.
he also has another unbound transactional type form where the same piece of code is needed. Maybe even call this second form from frmAssets when a location change is detected. He would need a popup form anyway from frmAssets to collect some of the data required to write the move records.
I have no hesitations about trying to continue to work with him, but he is under a bit of a dead line and I can feel the frustration level picking up.
I'm hoping someone else can jump in and speed up the process a bit for him.

Jim,

Posted in the Q some instructions to user to get the file (hopefully) converted, so you can keep helping, but also how to get uploaded.  If I am around when it is uploaded, my first attempt will be to convert the db to MDB for you to continue working this; however, I will help as much as I can since I have Office 2007 installed.

Can anyone with OLEDB/Oracle experience take a look at this:
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Microsoft/Development/MS_Access/Access_Coding-Macros/Q_25077041.html
This guy is trying to have a check at startup test a ODBC DSN connection. I the past, I've done that by simply opening a ADO connection using the DSN (so I can get specific error messages). The code which I gave him is tossing back a very generic error message number, yet from the ODBC manager he can test the connection and it works fine (although he gets a user name and password prompt). Linked tables within the Access DB work fine as well.
It must have something to do with the connection string, but for the life of me can't figure out what. This has dragged on way too long already for this guy.
Any help appreciated...

I'm blanking on the name of the utility/add-in that helps developers find instances of field names in forms and queries.  Anyone know this off the top of your head?

Note:
I'm helping DanRollins on his edit of an article about backing up an Access database.  The article describes processes that seem very inefficient and sloooow.  Does anyone know about performance issues involved in make table queries with the (From) IN clause?  Push vs Pull performance?

A real <*&^%$£ of a problem.
New records being automatically and erroneously generated in a table via a form, for no reason I can see.
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Microsoft/Development/MS_Access/Q_25866298.htm

If you download the poster's database then open the form frmData. Use the Last record icon to move - not the date in the Statusdate at the top right.
Move to the next record using the icon - this takes you to a new record of course, but you immediately get the same date as the previous record and an autonumber is allocated.
I have posted comments on what I have done in my final response in the question thread.
