I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

open up the default master page with sharepoint designer. You can edit from there. Just don't delete any content placeholders. If you don't want it, hide it deleting them will cause problems.

You should also be able to create your custom master page using Visual Studio 2008/2005, possibly even Visual Web Developer Express although I am not certain about this.

You are better off starting with the default masterpage for SP Portal 2003 and customizing it. If you don't then your master page will need to contain all of the same content placeholders as that one. I find it much easier starting with the default and editing to my needs.
