OK, I am very new to this area.  My situation is this:  I was just granted access to a test server and I am trying to test it out.  What software do I need? Management Studio/Visual Web Developer/Visual Studio, etc...?  I am not sure the difference on what these do.  I can only get software versions of 2005.  Thanks.

Since you mentioned that you would be doing development activity, then Management Studio would help you out.

Hope this helps
