Hi

Our CIO has given me the task of getting our Nagios to send Alerts/Notifications to specific pager/cellular-phone numbers in sms format. I have no Idee where to start or what to do.

I have noticed on our Groundwork/Nagios config there are options to setup a contact with a pager number, but does it work straight out the box or what will I need to do to get it working?

Kind Regards
Hendrik

Nagios can do paging one of two ways.

One way, the easiest is to a email enabled pager/phone and you code the 555-5555@pager.email in the pager field.  This works great, if your Internet connection is up and running.

The other way is via a modem to a alpha-numeric pager.  Which is a bit more difficult to setup, but will work if your Internet connection is down.

Hey

Thanks for the help giltjr. Here in south Africa our Cellular service providers have the option for Pager/Email, the only problem is the ID10Ts have the feature, but it does not work under any circumstances. Thus we had to get our own type of SMS/Pager gateway going.

I found a nice piece of software called Ozeki NG (http://www.ozekisms.com/) that supports the Hauwei E220 modem (their are other modems, but thats one of the few modems that are avalable here in South-Africa) for its GSM network access. It is quite easily configurable and it supports a myriad  of connection and SMS options that makes it useful in more than one way.
