Illlustrator: crop image to an image shape

Hi,

I need to learn how to "crop an image" according to another image, in illustrator.  It is hard to explain in text, so please refer to the image below.

You see the star in the image?  I would like to have an image that have everything outside the star removed.  A function that I would select an image and do something like "remove everything outside this vector".  So the result would be the star, with it's content and it's stroke, with the rest as transparent backgroud, so do do a png.

Please let me know if you have questions!  Thank's a lot!  I've been missing this knowledge for years, now!

It seems

Hi

If you want to do this you create what is called a 'Clipping Mask' for an Object. You need to place all your objects to be 'clipped in a group. Then take your star and make sure it is in front of the group.

Now either use the Object menu => Clipping Mask>Make or press CTRL+7 to apply the mask.

btw, if you want to release the mask you can do this from the same menu or use CTRL+SHIFT+7.

To align objcts within a clipped group you can use the 'Direct section too' (small hollow arrow top right of the toolbar) and move the objects individually without disturbing the whole group.

Hi,

Wow!!!  I've been trying to do this for so long!  There is just one thing though:  The star stroke disappeared.  Do you know what I should have done to my file before clipping so that I would not have lost it?

Thank's again!

Hi

yes it is designed to remove the stroke by default, simply use the Direct selection tool to select the star only and then apply the stroke again and you are done.
