I am having problem to setup a printer on AS400 environment. The problem is  to print invoices. It prints 500 pages at time. When you load the tray again it goes back to page one or you need to go to writer and set the page range to print from the last page....We used to have an old printer to run this process. The old printer had those jurassic jetdirect device attached to it, but we did not have to do anything besides loading paper to print. Any suggestion will be appreciated.

Assuming this is an LPD configuration, LPD provides pretty limited error handling capabilities.  Basically, the AS/400 sends down a control file and the print file to the LPD server in the printer, and the printer takes it from there.  Apparently, when an out-of-paper error occurs, the printer is throwing away the rest of the job.  You may be able to find a setting in the printer to control this behavior - check your HP documentation or with HP technical support.

Alternatively, you can reconfigure the printer on the AS/400 to print using the AS/400 SNMP driver, the PJL driver, or the IPP driver.  All of these drivers provide more sophisticated two-way communications and error handling than LPD.  This printer supports all three of these protocols.

Gary,

The link you provided it was very helpful. You were right about the settings on the printer.

Happy to help.

Just curious - were you able to change a setting on the printer itself so that it resumed LPD printing after a paper out error, or did you have to reconfigure as an SNMP, PJL, or IPP printer?

We are using I-O 5735e to spool the files and send to the printer.
