how to purge binary logs on a 4.0.20 box

i found the doc page

i tried (below) what am i missing??  


[root@millhouse root]# mysql --password mysql
Enter password:

mysql> PURGE BINARY LOGS BEFORE '2009-01-01 00:00:01';
ERROR 1064: You have an error in your SQL syntax.  Check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'BINARY LOGS BEFORE '2009-01-01 00:00:00'' at line 1

The problem is the syntax is valid for MySQL 4.1 and higher. You might like to use Reset master command instead.
