I know software raid stinks. I did not set this server up.  One of the drives is failing,,so I broke the mirror,,,took it out. shut it down and put it in a new drive of the same size, make, etc. ONly difference is new one is s little faster.. Add mirror is greyed out. Tried reformatting, adding voulume,,,no luck. I put the old drive back in as its still working. Now I have 2 different drive letters ( from breaking mirror) and still the "add mirror" is greyed out. Both hard drives are in place with all the same info on both. Hoping it works okay tomorrow for the users. Any thoughts on how I can replace the bad drive and get the "add mirror back.

Can you take a screen shot of Windows Disk Management with your new drive connected? I would like to have a look on the way Windows Disks snap-in sees the new drive.

I attached a word doc with the screen shot in it as I could not past it in here.
I put the old drive back to see if there was something wrong with the new drive, but the add mirror is still greyed out and now the drive letters are messed up. I need E to be F and F to be E. Do you think it will ruin the data if I change letters?
Thanks

Did you import the E: drive? It is marked as error having.
When you connect the new drive, is it basic or dynamic?
Note, first you need to initialize the drive. Then convert it to dynamic. Then run Add mirror (dynamic drive should have no volumes at the moment).
Also, how many drives do you have in system currently?
Screen shot shows at least three + 1 that is in mirror with C:
Right click on Disk 3 and select Initialize or tell me what choices are given to you.
Changing drive letters do not affect data. Data is data and drive letter is drive letter.

I did import the E drive ( this is the bad drive that I was replacing in the first place) I took the new drive out as I could not get it to see "add mirror" and thought maybe it was a problem with the new drive.
When the new drive was in, I made it dynamic and this E ( bad drive) that is in it  is also dynamic. I believe I did initialize the new drive and tried with and without volumes on it.
I have 4 drives in the system C is mirrored and E is suppossed to be mirrored, but I broke the mirror last night when I went to replace the bad drive.
When I right click on  E the only options are OPEN, EXPLORE, CHANGE DRIVE LETTER, FORMAT, DELETE VOLUME, PROPERTIES AND HELP ( extend volume and add mirror are greyed out) NO initialize is available.

The Add Mirror will not be available if you do not have free space to build  the mirror with.

I think there I could help you quicker.

I did not get any contact warning from you.
When you connect the new drive, initialize it\import and then convert to dynamic (if it is basic) do you create any volume on it?
Note, the entire space of the drive must be marked as Unallocated. Only then the system will detect admitted block of space to build the mirror from.

Needed to delete 8mb on drive using 3rd party software before I could mirror.  Thanks
